Why the scale slows around week eight
Almost every body adapts somewhere between weeks eight and twelve. It isn't failure — it's biology, and it's the reason we build the Plateau Protocol into every program.
Here's a conversation I have almost every week. A patient is eight, nine, ten weeks in. The first two months went beautifully — clothes looser, food noise quieter, the scale moving steadily. Then one Monday it just… stops. And the first thing she says to me is, "I think it stopped working."
It didn't stop working. Your body noticed.
Your body is doing its job
Bodies are built to defend their weight. When you lose it, your metabolism quietly adjusts: you burn a little less at rest, hunger hormones push back, and the same routine that produced steady loss now produces maintenance. Researchers call it metabolic adaptation. Patients call it the plateau. Either way, it's not a character flaw — it's the most predictable event in weight medicine.
The plateau isn't the medicine failing. It's your body asking for the next move.
What we do about it — before it happens
Because it's predictable, we plan for it. Every Rese weight program includes what we call the Plateau Protocol, and it starts at week eight — before most patients hit the wall, not after they've spent a month discouraged by it.
What that looks like depends on you, and it's your provider's call: looking at protein intake and sleep, checking whether the routine that got you here needs a new stimulus, and sometimes simply confirming that this month's job is holding ground while your body recalibrates. A maintenance month isn't a lost month.
The part nobody says out loud
A plateau is also proof of progress. Your body only defends a weight it has actually reached — it's adapting because you changed something real. The patients who do best long-term aren't the ones who never plateau. They're the ones who expected it, didn't panic, and worked the plan with their provider.
So if you're staring at a stubborn scale this week: you're not broken, and you're not done. You're on schedule.
The short version
- Nearly every body adapts between weeks 8 and 12 — it's biology, not failure.
- Rese's Plateau Protocol starts at week eight, before discouragement sets in.
- The answer is individual: dose review, protein, sleep, sometimes simply holding ground.
- A plateau is evidence of progress — your body defends only what you've achieved.
